New Macintosh purchases have been in a decline over the last year. (Thanks to
the W95 frenzy that has swept the country.) However, Macs remain a wonderful desktop
computer for many users. File sharing and immediate print capabilities in our
environment are absolutely cinchy! Due to the incredible ease of use with Macs,
this site will fill in slowly. Please make suggestions as to items that would
be helpful here right away and we will try to accommodate your request.
Mac Application Software
- Software available on EOS Mac Quadra.
Some software is available in the EOS mac quadra guest folder for group use.
Caveats: users must ensure that their "group" has bought into the site license
for whatever software they plan to install, e.g., MSOffice, etc. This mac is
located in 6703 and is the "public" ICESS mac. Scanners and software (desktop
and slide) are available. This mac is not backed up on a regular basis and files
are routinely thrown out when creation dates have aged 1 year or greater. Please
clean up after yourselves. Users are not to install software on this mac without
getting prior clearance from the System Group.
- James Marquez's guest AppleShare volumes.
James Marquez routinely makes cool software available on his guest folder. Examples
of latest and greatest stuff: Netscape Navigator and others. For late breaking
news, please email firstname.lastname@example.org. James always makes announcements
to email@example.com regarding software availability as well as virus warnings
and other misc. updates regarding the Mac world.
- UCSB has a site license for MS
Office. Each ICESS PI must be an active participant in the site license
agreement to utilize copies of the software.
- Check with your PI to see if they have bought Matlab
- The Word Macro Virus has been a popular repeat offender at ICESS and Bren
School. Viruses can be guilty of having overall strange effects on one's system.
Please get acquainted with viruses and virus hoaxes by visiting Computer
Virus Myths, a great site with many references and links to all kinds
of virus related information. Mac users at ICESS are encouraged to have an
active and updatable virus check and repair application running on their machine
at all times. We've had good success with Virex
However, we recommend you make a purchase based on your own individual needs.
